Tartan Designer
We developed and produced the first commercial and affordable tartan design software - Tartan Generator - over twelve years ago. Tartan Generator was released in 2000 and caused a revolution in the industry. As well as being able to view over 2500 existing registered tartans (as compiled by the Tartans Society of Scotland) it enabled for the first time a user to freely design their own tartans for personal, organisational, or business use. Many hundreds of tartans have been designed over the years using the program.
We developed a Professional version aimed at tartan designers and weaving mills. This offered many advanced features including an intuitive sett based interface, photorealistic thread rendering, and the facility to design using a mill's pallette of standard thread colours with Pantone support. We also developed the ".ttn" format for specifying a tartan. This allowed the straightforward saving and emailing of a design. At the same time we released Tartan Viewer - this is a free application and allows a user to open a .ttn file and view it, full screen if desired, exactly as it was designed - including photorealistic thread renditioning.
We developed an on-line designer program which was first released in 2004 and has been updated in a number of formats over the years. This was a simplified version of the Designer program but retained many of the features incluing the photorealistic renditioning.
The new on-line designer - on this site - is based on our many years of experiemce in tartan software development. Its intuitive interface allows, even a novice user, to create a design, save it, email it, and view it full screen as a photorealistic piece of cloth. We will continue to develop all our various platforms and welcome feedback from all users.
Users can submit the design for consideration for weaving to our panel of experts. for a modest fee. They will advise on the design - is it unique (i.e. it would not be confused with an existing tartan), does the sett size and the colours need modified to make the tartan affordably weavable, and is the scale suitable for using the tartan for making a kilt. They will then advise on the Registration process and weaving together with costs. Further advice would be given on having the tartan tailored into kilts, trews, or other items of highlandwear.
See www.tartanweb.com for our full range of highlandwear products.
